Road Race

Road Race

I could sit zazen

With a clear and empty mind

Focused repose from the

Busyness of the world

Instead I strapped into my

Porsche roll cage

Cocoon and fired up

Its raspy sound

On the track the other

Cars within inches

At the very limits of adhesion

There was no room for error

And no room for random thought

It becomes Zen no mind

It is active meditation

And the road race

Nothing more

Then an idea

Love

LOVE

“It’s cancer
And it’s really bad”

That was the
Explosive remark
From the Doctor
With no bedside manner

Then came the
Whirlwind of activity
The tsunami of
Information and
Choices to make
About who, what
When, where and why

Finally decisions
And a path forward
And hope for a longer
Life and more years
Of joy

Every day was full
Of intimacy
And more than
Anything cancer
Then became a journey
About love.

Ranger Cookies

Ranger Cookies

In the door
With a burst of energy
And excitement
From a day at school

And eager to rush
Out to play
With friends one
Of a score of
Imaginary games
In the era of
Free range children

On the counter
Still warm
With an unmistakable
Aroma and taste that
Called out for a handful

Mom had fresh
Baked cookies awaiting
Our arrival home

Oatmeal, sugar, flour
Butter, eggs and a full portion
Of love

They were Ranger cookies.
